HIGHX – Quite the Workout & So Much More with Gabby Reece

HIGHX – Quite the Workout & So Much More with Gabby Reece

Imagine walking into 24 Hour Fitness and the first thing you see is Gabby Reece getting interviewed by local media stations!! Jaw on the floor .. I kind of stopped in my tracks (and tried not to stare – too hard!). She was statuesque . beautiful .. crazy fit and super friendly! Everything I imagined!    Gabby came to town to introduce her new fitness experience HIGHX. I was one of the lucky few there to try out the new class. Me, there with a few other bloggers and fitness instructors, who were getting trained to teach HIGHX that day by Gabby herself.  Seriously, me, in the same room with her and being lead by the creator of this new, what I’m sure to be, fitness club favorite (pinch me) .. She has been teaching this class in her hometown of Hawaii for seven years. Gabby explained the class as a high intensity team “sport”. Where everyone works together in teams of 2-6 and motivates each other, at any level or age, as you progress through 15 different stations .. non-stop! Each station incorporates two different exercises. Each exercise is either done for 1 minute or 30 seconds at a time, depending on station, for a total of 3 minutes per station. Once “30” is called you switch exercises  – or stay on same exercise, again, depending on your station. For example my first station was 30 seconds of squat jumps across a bench then alternating with 30 seconds of squats – repeat for two more minutes. This first station had me dripping in sweat and I felt like I had never worked out before in my life and certainly not like a gal who did two ultras in a month just over eight weeks ago! Phew! When it was time for the next station I was happy to see the floor for planks and single arm balancing .. relieved for about a minute! My legs were shaky and on fire from the first round and we had 13 different rotations to go! I was so impressed with Gabby and how she worked the entire class of about 40 people. She walked the room and gave everyone a “good job” .. “looking good” and even a correction of form or two (that’d be me!). Oh yeah .. and a “nice work” from a pro is a definite ego boost. It was truly a kick booty, dripping sweat .. make you want to catch your breath kind of class! Once the class was over she gave a big congratulations to us all for completing it successfully and jokingly said she had 1,200 more exercises where that came from! Can you imagine?!? Wait .. What? 1,200...

Title Nine / The Fit Fest (pssst .. giveaway time)

Title Nine / The Fit Fest (pssst .. giveaway time)

On Wednesday I headed to Berkeley and entered my first Title Nine store – ahhhh! I had seen the catalog and ooohed and ahhhed over it for years but never anything more .. As a  Sweat Pink Ambassador, I got an invite to their blogger Fit Fest. The Fit Fest was all about the girls and finding that right sports bra (women we all know how hard this can be!). I had never had a sports bra fitting .. and boy do they know the sports bra business and have every kind of sports bra you could dream of!   I know I haven’t been running in great sports bras and when I did my last ultra it was evident. I wanted to take mine off at about mile 35 of fifty and throw it off a cliff! At mile 40’ish there was some serious bio-freeze action going on all around the sports bra band area (I have the best friends who signed up for that bio-freeze job – uh-huh for real!).  When I entered the store I was welcomed in by Molly and Amy, I called Amy The (sports) Bra Whisperer. Amy asked me my bra size and what I was looking for in a sports bra – me thinking I just don’t want to curse at it or tear it off during my next ultra! Amy knew exactly what I needed and she sent me into a fitting room with a stack of beauties (I will admit I typically get the boring colored sports bras because of my size, but not there!). She assured me that once I found the right one my “girls” running life would never be the same and I think she might be right. I tried on six different sports bras and found one that was it! I took it out for a bouncing, jumping test run .. on the in-store trampoline. How cool is that? They have a trampoline, jump ropes and a bouncy ball for you to test ride, er jump, the sports bras! I jumped and kicked and jumped some more and seriously the girls did not move!! And for me the winner was the Moving Comfort Juno Bra .. with a way cute grayish print (love it!).     You too can get in on the fun! The Title Nine Fit Fest is here with several locations to  choose from. If you’ve never had a sports bra fitting I recommend visiting a Title Nine store and taking a few out for some jumps!    Title Nine is graciously letting me host a giveaway .. for your very own perfect sports bra!! To enter I’d love for you to leave me a comment below on why you’d love a new sports bra and be...

New Fitness Class & Gabby Reece {what?!?!}

New Fitness Class & Gabby Reece {what?!?!}

As a busy mother runner .. I’m always looking for a new, fun .. and most importantly effective way to sweat – enter Gabrielle Reece!  Gabby Reece is a (gorgeous) well known Women’s Beach Volleyball League star and fitness icon – and she’s got a new gig.     When I was a few decades younger, I remember watching her on the sand and dreaming of her long legs, her athleticism and natural beauty. I had the long legs, but not quite the skill and grace that she possessed while playing any sort of sport. Volleyball (with my hand in the air) .. yep, just one of the many teams I tried out for in high school and never made. But there are no hard feelings volleyball – with a lot of hard work, and many years later, I am now a three time ultra runner and athlete! Okay, now back to Gabby .. She is known to women worldwide for spreading her philosophies on the love of fitness, good health and well-being for themselves and their family. All qualities I try to possess daily. She has recently partnered with 24 Hour Fitness and Lifeline to launch the new HIGHX training class. She is the creator of this new 50-minute high energy circuit training class designed to improve daily and overall athletic performance (can you hear me screaming .. I so need this class?!?!) It was created for all fitness and skill levels. I am hearing; perfect for the, somewhat uncoordinated, athlete that I am – winning!!    I will be hitting a local 24-Hour Fitness in a few days to give this, what I am sure will be a butt kicking, class a try. Oh and I will be doing my best, (not so goofy -trying too hard), posing if I get a chance to snap a pic with Gabby herself! Ahhh! The class is open  to club members and geusts alike on Sunday, June 14, 2015. Please call the 24 Hour Fitness Sacramento (916) 384-9555 for details. Stay tuned for my full review of HIGHX .. I can’t...

I’ve been a busy Mother Runner ..

I’ve been a busy Mother Runner ..

In the last three months I’ve been a busy mother runner (um, exhausted mother runner!) ..  From Novemebr to April I trained to run my second and third ultras (my second 50k and my first 50 Miler – American River 50 Mile Endurance Run ) within a month of each other. Months and months, miles and miles and hours and hours on the trails with the best training friends and pacers. They pushed and motivated me when there were times I wanted to sit and cry instead of take one more step (truth!) .. for that I am so thankful.     My running shoes have also been busy promoting the Ragnar Trail Relay Tahoe event, while working race expos, the REI Run Series and run clubs. The Tahoe event is going to be fabulous and a bit challenging all at once. Teams of eigth runners going 120 miles non-stop, relay style, all while camping  – run, camp, sleep .. repeat!  However, the biggest thing for this mother runner is that I am now the proud momma of a high school graduate and brand new 18 year-old (with both of these happening on the same day – talk about feeling like you want to cry all day!). My first born is now registered for his freshman year in college for the fall and he has a smarty pants fairly new 15 year-old, soon to be, sophomore in high school sister (for real the last eighteen years have flown by!). Old Father Time .. can you slow down a bit, please?!? Actually Father Time what I really want to know is .. why do my miles seem slower than the years?!?  Somehow training for my ultras and running the races seemed harder than giving birth! I jokingly said to a friend that I went into labor and had both of babies in less time than it took me to run my 50 miler (truthfully it feels like my oldest graduated faster than I ran it!). For this I’m not sure if I should be proud, laugh at myself or cry! Ha .. on the day of the American River 50 .. I know for sure I was crying .. too many times to recall. However, it’s one thing that I can say I did for myself (pity party and all) .. and no one can take that  away. That AR 50 medal hangs on my display in front proudly .. I almost want to put it in a glass trophy case with a light shining on it (cue the music and ahhhhhhh!!).  The weeks, months and inevitably years are going to speed by anyway so I might as well enjoy the miles ahead .. hard, easy, fast, slow...
