Running .. Solo .. Thankful for Friends ..

Running .. Solo .. Thankful for Friends ..

I will admit I love to run .. with friends! It’s funny to think that when I started running years ago .. I never ran with anyone. I would come home, change from work clothes to running clothes and run 5 miles, four days a week solo! Over the years .. discovering my inner athlete .. I’ve had many friends that have come into my life. So I’ve been lucky enough and planned my running and races to train for with my friends. These friends have ran with me, cried with me, trained with me, got up at crazy hours with me, definitely laughed with me .. and pushed me across so many finish lines. I cannot say thank you enough for them .. every single one! Some of these friends I may not run with any longer .. or even see very often, but they will always be a part of my journey. This morning I tossed and turned and wanted to resist the sunlight .. but I knew that if I didn’t get up and run I would not do it later (I’d find chores to do, social media to play on, lunches to make). Today July 1st .. I got up and ran solo .. for the first time in a while! Well .. I say solo but I did take my sidekick pup .. she needs the exercise too! The 2 miles, yes two, were hard .. but I went out and got it done. It’s time to learn to love the solo run again .. even if it’s just a few times a week .. and especially if it’s hard ! I know it’s not always easy, but always worth it! My journey started out hard and there are many more places I want to run .. I will love the...

Easy Summer with Training on the Horizon ..

Easy Summer with Training on the Horizon ..

So now that I’ve put it out there .. I can’t stop thinking about my next running adventure .. Ragnar Relay in Napa Valley ! Have you ever run a relay style race? Here’s s a breakdown of how a Ragnar Relay works .. Ragnar Relay is an overnight relay tackling 200 miles! There are 12 runners per team – caravanning in 2 vans with 6 runners per van. Each runner gets three different “legs” to run (various mileages), totaling the 200 miles as a team. Or you can be an extra-cool runner and run on an Ultra team .. 6 runners covering the same mileage! Dare I say one year .. I want to do this!! I can’t say it enough .. this race is so worth it every year! So much so that I will also be running Ragnar Trail at Vail Lake , as a Ragnar Trail Warrior, a month later in October! Yep .. trails and Ragnar .. the best of both worlds! This will be my fourth Ragnar and it’s looking like it’s going to be the one that’s giving me the longest distance .. with a total mileage of 26.3 miles. Now time to work my (race/training) calendar – with just eleven weeks of training on the horizon (marathon distance Ragnar style-woot!) .. My easy summer training just got a little busier! Time to find my “athlete” and run on...

6 on the trails .. Summertime Running & Living

6 on the trails .. Summertime Running & Living

On the hunt for some sweat, sun and beauty this morning .. somehow it always turns into a therapy session for me – thanks Christina! I love that I can hit one of my go-to trails in less than 30 minutes, today it was Horseshoe Bar. There were no horses this morning, but horse tracks {it’s a treat when we do see the horses}! We hit the trails at 6:30 a.m. .. and the sun had already been up for an hour! Seriously I’ve got to get up early enough to catch a sunrise run on the trails .. It is on my to do list for the summer! I don’t have a race on the books until Ragnar Napa Valley in September. So over the next {way too fast} weeks it will be all about enjoying the season and my teens for the summer! Of course I will be running and strength training .. but if there are a few lazy days of summer .. I won’t mind! I know, I know .. eventually I will have to get back into “training mode” for Ragnar .. but right now I want to pretend I can run a marathon distance in less than 24-hours {with no sleep, no showers, irregular meals .. and let’s be honest irregular potty visits TMI but true!} .. Yep, pretend like I can run it like I ran the 6 this morning on the...

Mud {Pretty Muddy Recap}, Fun & Jumping …

Mud {Pretty Muddy Recap}, Fun & Jumping …

Well May .. your first week zoomed by {as I knew it would}! It’s already been a crazy few days of May .. Things I’ve done so far … My first mud run, logged 22 miles and resumed strength training .. ouch {my body will thank me once the sore muscle ache goes away, right?}!! Oh yeah, and everything else in between .. On Saturday, I ran in the Pretty Muddy 5k with some friends {and hundreds of other mud-seekers}! I had never done a mud run, so for that I was excited! I knew I would come out muddy .. but didn’t expect my clothes and shoes to feel like they weighed 20 pounds .. haha! Jumping over mud puddles, climbing mud covered fences (landing in mud) climbing under ropes through mud, and slipping down a huge slide .. you guessed it right into a mud bath! It was a great way to burn a few calories and most of all have fun while doing it! I’d love to do this with my daughter and her Girl Scout troop and our troop moms (I think the girls would love it more!). Since there was so much mud we knew it was best to leave our “cameras” (phones) in the car! So my always prepared friend, Rachel, brought an “old school”, as my two teens would say, disposable camera (um, this idea never crossed my mind! (Love her!) She kindly let me borrow this pic from the race course … Thanks Running Rachel! Having now successfully done my first mud run .. I can say I’d love to do it again, who can say no to fun, mud and running?!? I cannot wait to see the event pics .. oh boy these should be good! Now onto what has been making me walk a little funny .. At the beginning of the year I did a New Years Shred with Bobbi of NHerShoes .. and I absolutely loved it! So with summer literally just weeks away .. I knew it was time to shred again! This time it’s a Summer Shred – Eeeeekkk … the next 3.5 weeks of clean eats, sweat and tears (um, walking down the stairs) .. bring it on!! So far in the first 4 days of the shred … I’ve jump roped more than I think I’ve ever jumped in my life and my ever so dreamed about “mommy-abs” are feeling it! The next few weeks of May are certain to fly by .. and I am hoping by then to say I can do more than 5 regular push-ups instead of the “girly-ones” .. not to have to stop and catch my breath...

It’s (already) May .. Lots of Fun (& miles) on my Schedule

It’s (already) May .. Lots of Fun (& miles) on my Schedule

At the start of the fifth month I am reflecting on how fast this year has gone by already (I think I may have calendar whiplash!!) … Seriously, wasn’t it just January? What happened to February?!? March I remember you .. (I ran my first ultra 50k .. I am an Ultra Runner)! April where did you go? May .. can you please take your time?!? Anyone else feel the same way?!? I may have mentioned before, that I am participating in Run This Year, a virtual running challenge. At the beginning of the year I made the goal of running 2014 km or 1,251 miles (my biggest mileage goal ever!) .. roughly 100 miles a month or 25 miles a week. As of April 30th I have run 453 miles (yahoo!) .. I am on my way. For every mile I am grateful for my strong body that carries me physically and mentally. On May 3rd, I will be running my first mud run as a blogger – so excited for this! I will be running and adventuring through 3 miles and 10 obstacles and of course mud in the Pretty Muddy Women’s Run – Sacramento . If you missed my pre-race review check out it here in my Pretty Muddy Pre-Event Excitement. A few weeks later I will be attending my first retreat .. the Refresh Summit. Where it will be all about fitness and faith .. something I have been wanting more of and finding balance. I want to be inspired! On the last day of the month I will be heading down to San Diego with a friend to run part two of our 3 race endeavor on June 1st .. as we are on the hunt for the Cali Bling medal and we get to run Rock N Roll San Diego. I am ready for fun in the sun!! In the midst of all the running and refreshing fun of May .. there will be several school events to finish off the school year (my youngest teen will be moving on up to high school, and my biggest teen will be a senior!), a big Girl Scout award ceremony for my girl and her troop who have worked very hard this year .. and everything else in between .. I hoping I can hang on the for always crazy, worth every single minute, wild...

Change of (race) Plans .. and Focus (my real life)

Change of (race) Plans .. and Focus (my real life)

Well it’s been 4 weeks since my first 50k and I LOVED IT (every single step, the hard, the sweat, the fun)! That feeling was like no other crossing the finish line. I had my mind set on finishing another just 6 weeks later .. but after an “easier” few weeks of recovery and maintenance mode training .. and a half marathon last weekend which I ran for nothing but FUN .. my heart just did not seem into another 50k {right now}. Whhhhaaatttt?!? Hmmmm how does this happen with something you loved?!? I’ve had heart to heart texting convos with friends and they both reassured me that it was okay to not do it. That it was okay to feel that way (when in my head I was feeling, um guilty)! One of them said that it was even normal to be a little sad .. after a big race. They also reassured me that they knew I could finish it if I chose to run it .. and that I was strong, but, I liken it to a runners low after my runners high and can only wonder .. am I really strong, am I okay?!? I’ve also got to remember .. my body has been in training mode for almost a year .. coming off a marathon and a 50k in three months .. lots of miles and training (I need to listen to it!). I don’t ever want to burn out .. so I think the answer is yes .. it is okay! So for the next eight months my vision is – to complete another 50k (thinking December) .. looking forward to running and completing the second and third races on a bling mission for a Cali Combo Medal from the Rock ‘n Roll Marathon Series, running for the fourth year the Ragnar Relay in Napa in September and a Ragnar Relay Trail to fit into my schedule as well (yay, I cannot wait). Next on my schedule though I have my first mud run, the Pretty Muddy 5k .. and I am sure a few more trail races and fun runs to sprinkle in here and there. In a few weeks I will be going to my first retreat, the Refresh Summit .. something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, I am craving a healthy balance of faith and fitness .. and learning to how to do it all (ha, or think I can)! So as I sit and type all of the above (and read and re-read 20 times), no more feeling sad (or guilty) about it .. It’s time to readjust my big girl running shoes .. and...

My year running (so far) …

My year running (so far) …

In January I made a few (running) goals for 2014 .. 1. Run 1,200 miles (1,251.4 to be exact). I have been participating in #RunThisYear to keep me accountable and have found several others participating in the same and have admittedly been virtually, stalking eh, um .. following for some really great reading and things to put on my never ending to try list. I was also a featured runner recently by Kristen McLendon for Run This Year (read it here) .. this was so exciting! 2. Run an Ultra ✔️ (I successfully succeeded and am in love with the Ultra 50k distance!). 3. Be a stronger athlete (physically and mentally). This is always a work in progress, but I have made small steps (see #2, completed an ultra without going mental .. you can read about it here Ultra in Review). 4. Be consistent with strength training (this too a work in progress!), as I know it would drastically benefit #3 5. Run my life .. aside from the act of physically running, but doing my best to put my faith, family and household (laundry, endless dog hair, dust, empty picture frames, and yes sometimes dirty floors) first. Life as a busy party of four with a crazy extracurricular schedule – this is overwhelming daily! As month three of this year comes to an end and a new month begins tomorrow .. I will continue to #runthisyear and #runmylife as best I know how! One mile, one day .. one adventure at a time! How are you running your year? I’d love to hear your goals and successes .. please...
